Internet Science Week

- 12 Mar 2004

This is a really fun site to spend some time exploring on a Saturday morning or afternoon (depending on how hectic the night before was!). They are constantly adding new stuff, and it is packaged in a very accessible way. If you go to the science section and then click on the links on the left you can choose to learn How Rainforests Work, How the Hubble Space Telescope Works and any manner of other how-to's. This site is also very child friendly (like FirstScience!) and you can happily leave your ankle-biters to explore. I recommend reading whilst wearing your dressing gown. This WILL NOT improve the science on display, but will at least make you feel less guilty about sleeping in.

Sunday - http://www.nobel.se/

This is the homepage of the famous prizes which were first awarded in 1901. (You can read a history here). This is a tremendous resource which always rewards a visit. It is a fact that if you are awarded a Nobel Prize in anything that you are required to deliver a lecture on a relevant topic. This site has the text of all of them, and online video presentations of the more recent ones. So that collected together in one site is the wisdom of some honest to goodness great achievers and quite a few geniuses in many fields. So for example you can read Albert Einstein's 1921 lecture on 'Fundamental Ideas and problems of the Theory of Relativity' or maverick genius Richard Feynman on the topic of 'The Development of the Space-Time View of Quantum Electrodynamics'. Fun Stuff! Plus they have articles on all manner of subjects. Some of the lectures can be heavy going, but honestly this site is a revelation. They offer so much quality information it is simply staggering.

Monday - http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/

The BBC spend fortunes on their internet presence and it shows on their science portal. Long a producer of some great science programming, the BBC science site is a bit like the tardis in Doctor Who. It doesn't look much on the outside, but is an absolute monster when you start clicking on links and going deeper down the rabbit hole. So this really is a 'portal' and not a site. In truth you can suffer from overwhelm here, because there is so much information, but it is worth persevering. For example, there is a great offshoot about Leonardo Da Vinci, a nice eye colour game and information about puberty to help you to cope with your little dears. You'll love it!
