2008 Vannevar Bush awardee Norm Augustine to address board's open plenary

The National Science Board (NSB) will hold the fourth of its six annual meetings related to national science and engineering policy issues and oversight of the National Science Foundation (NSF) from August 12-13, in Arlington, Va.

The highlight of the meeting will be a presentation by the NSB's 2008 Vannevar Bush Awardee Norm Augustine on the state of the American science and engineering enterprise in the global economy. The Vannevar Bush Award is the most prestigious award for lifetime achievement in science and engineering presented by the NSB.

Augustine, former chairman of the "Rising Above the Gathering Storm" Commission and former chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin, was out of the country and unable to personally accept this award during the NSB's annual award ceremony last May at the U.S. Department of State. His daughter accepted the award in his stead and carried a message of Augustine's promise to address members of the NSB during its August meeting.

Newly re-elected chairman Steven Beering and newly-elected vice chairman Patricia Galloway will preside over the meeting after elections the NSB held at the last meeting in May 2008. A full agenda of the meeting is available at: http://www.nsf.gov/nsb/meetings/2008/0812/index.jsp.

Media representatives are invited to attend all open sessions, subject to provisions of the Government in the Sunshine Act.

All meeting sessions will be held in room 1235 at NSF headquarters: 4201 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, Va. (Ballston metro stop). For the Augustine speech, overflow seating with audio-visual transmission will also be available in 375.

Journalists interested in attending and covering the board meeting should contact Lisa-Joy Zgorski at 703-292-8311 by 7 a.m. on Tues., August 12, to enable security arrangements.
