That Friday Feeling - 3 Apr 2007It's called Good Friday, but this week the news isn't great. April the 6th marks the release of the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report from Working Group II. This expert panel has worked for several years now, producing a synthesis of the best scientific data available so far on the impacts of climate change and the opportunities for adaptation.
Upstairs, my 5 month-old daughter, Molly, is bending the window glass with her screams. It could be wind, it could be teething, either way she's having ten minutes with her blanket and stripey elephant before we set off for our 17th lap of the house this evening. Now, embargoes mean that I can't say what is in the latest IPCC Impacts and Adaptation report. Suffice to say, it is required reading for us all.
In 2050, Molly will be 43 years old. The world in 2050, as glimpsed through the Working Group II report will keep me awake tonight even after our youngest has finally gone to sleep. On climate change, the media may be rather jaded, the politicians emptied of soundbites. But what they read this Friday should not be consigned to the 'other news' columns. This is an urgent warning and, without urgent action, it is a crystal ball.
