Others think that navigational devices will be an alternative to having carers guide elderly people around, allowing them to retain their freedom and autonomy. One small Scottish study, UTOPIA, looked at the design of various devices and found that older people were more comfortable using landmarks for navigation, rather than map-based programmes. Also, multiple modes of communication were important: “If you can’t see so well, then the combination of spoken and tactile interaction is better. By using different senses, we can compensate for the loss of one,” says Brewster.

The developed world continues to look for innovative solutions to cope with an ageing population. Today’s research into more sophisticated technologies could ensure a golden age for tomorrow’s seniors. As for me, I am looking forward to settling down with my friendly companion-bot and having a disgraceful retirement in cyberspace…
